About Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company
The history of the company goes back to the founding on June 30, 1866. At the time, boilers were being used everywhere as the number one way to heat water throughout buildings. But the technology was nowhere near perfect and fraught with problems in fact, boiler explosions were extremely common and one happened every few days.
As more and more manufacturers turned to steam boilers at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, there was more of a need for this type of insurance. Some places were still using rivers and streams in order to power their plants, but as manufacturing technology increased, more power was needed and that's where steam boilers came in.
Unfortunately, the steam boilers and engines used brand-new technology that was not understood or perfected completely. This meant that boiler explosions were not only possible but even likely in many cases. When boiler explosions happened, companies lost their manufacturing facilities and infrastructure. Even more tragic was the loss of life that accompanied these boiler explosions. But Hartford was set up to not only protect companies from boiler explosions but also to ensure that safety regulations and protocols were followed.
Of course, paying for boiler explosions was something that the company grew tired of quickly, so we came up with the idea of fitting boilers with safety devices that would minimize this event. Anyone that wanted insurance on their boiler would have to install the safety devices. This led to them becoming the top provider insurance for boilers with expansion later and other products.
